Elbow Tendinopathy Treatment
ELBOW TENDINOPATHY TREATMENT AT RX PHYSIOTHERAPY
At Rx Physiotherapy, we understand how frustrating elbow pain can be — especially when it affects your training, grip strength, or even simple daily tasks.
Elbow tendinopathy isn’t just inflammation.
It’s a load-related tendon condition that develops when the demands placed on your arm exceed its capacity.
Our approach is simple:
Reduce your pain, restore your strength, and build your capacity so your elbow can handle load again.
What is elbow tendinopathy?
Elbow tendinopathy refers to irritation and structural changes in the tendons around the elbow, most commonly:
- Lateral elbow tendinopathy (tennis elbow) – pain on the outside of the elbow
- Medial elbow tendinopathy (golfer’s elbow) – pain on the inside of the elbow
It typically presents as:
- Pain with gripping, lifting, or carrying
- Pain during gym exercises (pulling, pressing, or gripping movements)
- Reduced grip strength
- Local tenderness around the elbow
- Stiffness or discomfort after activity
Despite the name, most people who develop this condition don’t play tennis or golf.
Why does it happen?
Elbow tendinopathy develops when the tendon is exposed to more load than it can currently tolerate.
Common contributing factors include:
- Sudden increases in training or workload
- Repetitive gripping or lifting tasks
- Poor load management in the gym
- Reduced forearm strength
- Sustained positions (e.g. desk work, mouse use)
- Returning to activity too quickly after a break
Importantly:
This is a capacity issue — not just inflammation.
Who We Treat
- Gym members with pain during pulling or pressing exercises
- Office workers with persistent elbow discomfort
- Tradespeople performing repetitive manual tasks
- Racquet sport athletes
- Anyone with ongoing or recurring elbow pain
From everyday function to high performance — we guide you back.
Load is the Solution
Best-practice management of elbow tendinopathy focuses on progressive loading, not rest alone.
This includes:
✔ Gradual strengthening of the forearm muscles
✔ Controlled exposure to gripping and lifting
✔ Building tendon capacity over time
Passive treatments alone don’t solve the problem long-term.
Tendons need load to adapt.
Our Approach to Elbow Tendinopathy Rehabilitation
At Rx Physiotherapy, we take a structured, individualised approach — no generic exercises, no guesswork.
We start by understanding how your elbow is being used.
- Assess elbow, wrist, and forearm function
- Identify whether symptoms are lateral or medial
- Analyse training or work-related load
- Rule out other causes (e.g. nerve-related pain)
- Create a structured rehab plan
You leave your first session with clarity and direction.
Early management focuses on reducing irritation without stopping completely.
- Modify aggravating activities
- Introduce pain-guided loading
- Isometric exercises for pain management
- Reduce excessive strain while maintaining activity
This is the key phase for recovery.
- Progressive forearm strengthening (wrist extensors/flexors)
- Grip strength development
- Controlled loading through functional patterns
- Gradual increase in tendon capacity
Structured loading programs are shown to improve pain and function over time.
Once strength improves, we reintroduce higher demands.
- Gym-based loading progressions
- Work-specific or sport-specific tasks
- Higher load gripping and lifting
- Endurance and repeatability under load
Elbow tendinopathy often returns if capacity isn’t maintained.
We focus on:
- Long-term strength and load management
- Grip strength and endurance
- Training technique and progression
- Ongoing support where needed
It’s Not Just the Elbow
Elbow pain is often influenced by the entire upper limb.
We assess and address:
- Wrist and forearm strength
- Shoulder strength and control
- Load distribution through the arm
- Movement patterns in training and work
Because better load sharing = less strain on the elbow.
Education and Confidence
We help you:
- Understand what’s driving your pain
- Know what level of activity is safe
- Progress without fear of worsening symptoms
- Return to training and work with confidence
YOUR PARTNER IN RECOVERY
At Rx Physiotherapy, we combine:
- Evidence-based rehab
- Structured strength programs
- Performance-focused recovery
- Ongoing support
Because the goal isn’t just to settle your pain —
it’s to build a stronger, more resilient tendon.
Want to Learn More?
Elbow tendinopathy is common — especially in people who train, lift, or work with their hands.
Most cases improve with:
Load management, Progressive strengthening, & Time and consistency
The goal isn’t just pain relief — it’s long-term resilience and performance.
